Before the sclerotherapy method is applied in treating varicose veins, the vein showing insufficiency is diagnosed. In this process, the structure of varicose veins and the veins in which they are located are determined by a detailed physical examination accompanied by a color doppler ultrasound. If the insufficiency is only in superficial veins, sclerotherapy is applied.

The appropriate environment, medication, and patient are prepared for varicose veins that can be treated with sclerotherapy. Since it is a non-surgical method, it is possible to apply the treatment in clinics. It is decided whether the varicose vein will be treated with foam sclerotherapy or sclerotherapy with medication.

Foam (Sclerotherapy) Application

After the examination and diagnosis process, the patient and the materials for the application are prepared after deciding whether foam sclerotherapy or liquid sclerotherapy will be used. Sclerotherapy application for each vein takes approximately 15 to 45 minutes. After the application, the patient must wear compression stockings for a few days.

Several sessions may be required for the sclerotherapy method, which closes the varicose vein with medication or foam. This application cannot be applied to patients with varicose veins. The situations where sclerotherapy application is risky can be listed as follows;

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding periods
  • Conditions in which arterial vessels are unhealthy
  • Having an allergenic constitution
  • Presence of vascular occlusion

Although the sclerotherapy method may seem simple, it is a serious procedure that an experienced surgeon should perform. Before this procedure, it is of great importance that the vein map is removed in detail, the patient’s general health status is checked, and the correct vein is treated after the detection of the insufficient vein. It should not be forgotten that varicose vein treatment is personalized.
