What Is Glutathione? Functions and Benefits

What Is Glutathione? Functions and Benefits
In my practice, patients receiving ozone therapy often ask me about glutathione. The question “what is glutathione?” may seem simple, but answering it properly requires understanding one of the cornerstones of cellular health.
Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant produced naturally in the body that plays a critical role in cell health. In recent years, it has appeared frequently in scientific studies due to its effects at the cellular level.
What Is Glutathione?
Glutathione (GSH) is a tripeptide molecule composed of three amino acids: glutamate, cysteine and glycine. It is the most abundant intracellular antioxidant in the body.1
It is found in particularly high concentrations in the liver. It also plays an active role in organs such as the lungs, kidneys, intestines and brain.
The key functions of glutathione can be summarised as follows:
- Protects cells from oxidative stress
- Directly neutralises free radicals
- Plays a role in the regulation of vitamins D, E and C1
- Contributes to the elimination of drugs and toxins from the body
What Does It Do in the Body?
The functions of glutathione in the body involve multiple systems. When I explain this to my patients, I cover three main headings:
Antioxidant Protection
Glutathione is the primary line of defence against damage caused by free radicals to cellular structures. It does this in two ways: it directly neutralises free radicals and acts as a cofactor for enzymes such as glutathione peroxidase.1
To use a simple analogy: if our cells have a shield, glutathione is the most important part of that shield.
Detoxification
The liver is the primary organ that processes toxins in the body. Glutathione plays a critical role in this process. Toxins, heavy metals and certain drug metabolites bind to glutathione, become water-soluble and are eliminated from the body.2
There is therefore a direct relationship between liver health and glutathione levels.
Cellular Balance
Glutathione takes on a central role in maintaining the intracellular oxidation-reduction balance. When this balance is disrupted, cells begin to suffer damage. Glutathione is one of the most important molecules in sustaining this balance.1
Why Do Glutathione Levels Decline?
I hear this question frequently. The answer is both simple and important.
As we age, the body’s capacity to produce glutathione decreases. Studies have shown that the primary reason for this decline is insufficient availability of glycine and cysteine, the amino acids required to build glutathione.3
Factors other than ageing that can lower glutathione levels:
- Chronic stress
- Smoking and alcohol use
- Poor and inadequate nutrition
- Prolonged exposure to environmental toxins
- Chronic diseases
Clinical studies have shown that glutathione deficiency is the primary cause of oxidative stress in older individuals, and that this can be corrected by dietary cysteine and glycine supplementation.3
In Which Fields Is It Being Researched?
Glutathione is a molecule examined under various headings in the scientific literature. Some current areas of research:
- Cellular ageing processes and antioxidant systems3
- Immune system functions
- Effects on skin health4
- Its relationship with neurodegenerative diseases
- Liver detoxification capacity
However, results from these studies may vary from person to person. Rather than drawing a one-size-fits-all conclusion, individual assessment is always a more accurate approach.
The Relationship Between Glutathione and Ozone Therapy
The ozone therapy I apply in my practice is a method aimed at supporting the body’s antioxidant defence mechanisms. There are studies indicating that ozone therapy stimulates glutathione production.
Considering these two approaches together may be relevant particularly in cases such as chronic fatigue, recurrent infections or diabetic wounds. However, any treatment plan must be established through physician evaluation. Doctor evaluation is required before beginning any supportive therapy.
Who Might Be Considered for It?
Glutathione support or approaches aimed at increasing glutathione levels vary according to individual needs. Generally, physician evaluation is recommended in the following situations:
- Those experiencing chronic fatigue and low energy
- Those under intense stress
- Those in the process of managing a chronic disease
- Older age groups
- Those seeking immune system support
However, this evaluation must be carried out by a physician. General recommendations made without considering individual differences may be misleading. Glutathione is a supportive therapy, not a treatment for any specific disease, a proper assessment determines whether it is appropriate for you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it necessary to take glutathione supplements?
Not for everyone. The body produces glutathione naturally. However, factors such as age, chronic illness or intense stress can reduce this production. The need for supplementation should be determined through physician evaluation.
Which foods contain glutathione?
Foods high in sulphur content, such as broccoli, spinach, avocado, asparagus and garlic, support glutathione production. The amino acid cysteine obtained from protein sources is also important.
How can glutathione deficiency be detected?
There is no specific symptom. However, chronic fatigue, frequent illness and a general feeling of exhaustion can be associated with low glutathione levels. A definitive diagnosis is made through blood tests.
Does ozone therapy increase glutathione levels?
There are studies suggesting that ozone therapy supports the body’s antioxidant defence system and stimulates glutathione production. You can find detailed information on our treatment overview page.
Is glutathione administered intravenously (IV)?
Glutathione can be administered orally, topically and intravenously. IV administration has advantages in terms of bioavailability but must be carried out under physician supervision.
